Adult Withdrawal Management Services: Starting the Journey with Safety and Support
At The Bridge, we believe recovery begins with the right support. For people struggling with substance use, often, that starts with medically supervised withdrawal. Our Adult Withdrawal Management Services (WMS) program aligns with The Bridge’s mission to inspire healthy communities and resilient people through innovation by providing the latest evidence-based protocols for withdrawal. WMS also embodies the Bridge’s commitment to collaboration, by working closely with Interior Health and other programs within the continuum of recovery-based care.
At WMS, every person is met with respect, dignity, and choice.
The program is unique in its accessibility and comprehensive support. It operates year-round in a secure, illicit substance-free, live-in environment, offering 24-hour nursing care and physician assessments. The program also provides educational group sessions to enhance understanding of addiction and coping strategies. Its self-referral policy and free services make it accessible to a wide range of individuals in the community.
A Safe Place to Begin Again
Withdrawal can be physically and emotionally difficult—but it doesn’t have to happen alone. WMS provides:
✔ Illicit substance-free environment
✔ 24/7 medical care and monitoring
✔ Education on addiction, cravings, and relapse prevention
✔ Group and one-on-one support
✔ Connection to treatment programs and community services
Participants also receive support with housing, mental health referrals, and introductions to peer support networks such as SMART Recovery, AA, and NA.
Whether someone is coming to WMS after a lapse, looking for help for the first time, or preparing to transition to a longer-term program, they’re met with respect, compassion, and dignity.
Transforming Lives, One Step at a Time
WMS is often the first point of contact for individuals entering The Bridge’s broader continuum of care. Many go on to attend live-in programs for up to a year, rebuild ties with family, return to work or school, and rejoin community life.
One client left a handwritten note for staff after completing the program, thanking them for offering care without judgment during one of the hardest times in their life. That note now sits in the staff area—a reminder that small moments of kindness can be the foundation for lasting change.
Why It Matters
Withdrawal management doesn’t just reduce the medical risks of substance use. It also prevents unnecessary hospital visits, reduces strain on emergency services, and helps people start recovery with a strong foundation.
By offering timely access to care, WMS supports not only individuals but also the health and safety of the entire community.
Looking Ahead
The WMS team is preparing to integrate into the provincial Road to Recovery initiative, a new model of care that connects people quickly and smoothly to detox, treatment, and recovery supports. Future goals include:
💙 Strengthening referral pathways across services
💙 Reducing wait times for access to care
💙 Expanding coordinated, person-centered supports
💙 Ensuring every participant is matched to the right level of care—when they need it most
