☆An Employee Interview with Shey Still! ☆
(Residence Worker, Kelowna)
Q: CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU INITIALLY CAME TO WORK AT THE BRIDGE?
A: I have a background in low barrier harm reduction outreach and housing. Prior to my career in Kelowna, I worked on the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver for a number of years. My most recent employment prior to working at the Bridge Youth and Family Services, was with HOPE Outreach, an organization that worked for and in collaboration with sex workers to support them in their daily needs. I have been working in the front lines for the past 13 or so years, while some moments have been stressful, all of them have been worth it to see people succeed in their goals and in things that are meaningful to them.
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT SUPPORTED RECOVERY?
A: I play a supportive role within Supportive Recovery- Kelowna as a Supported Recovery Residence Worker. I believe that my job is to help people envision a life for themselves and provide resources for them to help achieve their goals towards health and wellness, in whatever capacity that looks like for them. I enjoy listening to the participants in supported recovery and helping to brainstorm options and solutions to life’s every day curveballs, and watch the participants grow in their confidence to handle life and anything that comes up through reaching out and support, and also recognizing that they often possess the skills within themselves to become what they desire. It’s fun to be a cheerleader to life!
Q: WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU'VE FACED IN THIS ROLE? HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?
A: Some challenges that I faced in this role was that I have learnt the role very much by doing, so this has required a lot of questions being answered and a few teensy tiny mistakes being made as I learn and grow. I have so appreciated a space to learn with grace and understanding for different ways to learn how to do a job.
Q: USING THREE WORDS, DESCRIBE THE DYNAMIC OF THE TEAM AT SUPPORTED RECOVERY.
A: Open-minded, team players, good communicators
Q: WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT THE WORK THAT YOU DO?
A: I get to see people recover from a place where they once found hopeless and get to bear witness to people finding hope in their lives again. Where there is breath, there is life.
Q: OUTSIDE OF WORK, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS?
A: I love to garden, paddle board, spend time outside with my dogs and my partner. I also love beading Indigenous jewelry.
