Withdrawal Management Services
Jul 09, 2024

The Bridge's Withdrawal Management Service (WMS) provides fourteen beds for medically  supported withdrawal management and six beds for transition. Most participants are individuals seeking to safely discontinue use of alcohol and opiates. The service is for individuals over the age of 18 and is not exclusive to residents of Kelowna. In fact, the team provides care to the entirety of the Interior Health region, and frequently see clients who reside out of community.

Typical length of stay for participants is 7-10 days, and they receive support from the team consisting of LPNs, RNs RPNs, Withdrawal Management Workers and Recovery Care Workers. There are also four Physicians that support the service. Weekly, an Interior Health Clinician attends the site to assist participants in connecting to mental health and substance use community services. There is also attendance biweekly from an Income Assistance Outreach Worker who supports individuals with the Income Assistance application process.

There are many wonderful volunteers who provide supplementary services to participants, including NA, AA, Life Ring, Stop HIV Testing, Massage Therapy and Guided Relaxation.  These services have been very well received by participants, and The Bridge is extremely grateful to these volunteers.

Last year, approximately 518 individuals accessed The Bridge's WMS. The Transition Program also continues to increase in demand as well as in the number of individuals accessing it.
